His mother prayed to St. Francis of Assisi for his healing. When he recovered, St. Francis reportedly exclaimed \"O buona ventura\" (O good fortune), giving him his religious name.\n\nEntering the Franciscans in 1243, Bonaventure studied under Alexander of Hales in Paris, becoming a master of theology. His brilliant synthesis of faith and reason, combining Augustinian tradition with Aristotelian philosophy, earned him recognition as one of the greatest medieval theologians.\n\nElected Minister General of the Franciscans in 1257 at age 40, he found the Order divided between strict and moderate interpretations of poverty. Through wise governance and his biography of St. Francis, he unified the Order, earning the title \"Second Founder.\"\n\nHis theological works, especially \"Journey of the Mind to God,\" blend intellectual rigor with mystical insight. He taught that all creation reflects God's glory and that contemplation leads through creation to the Creator. His Christocentric theology emphasized Christ as the center of all sciences.\n\nCreated Cardinal-Bishop of Albano in 1273, he helped prepare the Second Council of Lyon, working for Church unity. He died suddenly during the Council on July 15, 1274.
