On December 9, 1531, while walking to Mass, he encountered a beautiful lady surrounded by light on Tepeyac Hill. She identified herself as the Virgin Mary and asked him to request that the bishop build a church on the site.\n\nBishop Juan de Zumárraga was skeptical and requested a sign. On December 12, the Virgin sent Juan Diego to gather roses from the barren hilltop - Castilian roses that didn't grow in Mexico. When Juan Diego opened his tilma (cloak) before the bishop to show the roses, the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared imprinted on the fabric.\n\nThe bishop immediately believed and built the requested church. Juan Diego spent the remaining 17 years of his life as guardian of the chapel and the miraculous image, sharing his story with the millions of pilgrims who came to see it. He lived in a small hermitage attached to the chapel, dedicating himself to prayer and evangelization.\n\nJuan Diego's humble obedience and the miraculous tilma led to the conversion of nearly nine million indigenous people within seven years.
