Ordained in Rome in 1942, he returned to El Salvador where he served in various pastoral and administrative roles.\n\nAppointed Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977, he was initially considered conservative. However, the assassination of his friend Fr. Rutilio Grande, who worked with the poor, transformed him. He became an outspoken advocate for human rights and social justice.\n\nDuring El Salvador's civil conflict, Romero used his Sunday homilies, broadcast nationally by radio, to report disappearances, tortures, and murders. He denounced violence from both the military government and leftist guerrillas, calling for dialogue and respect for human dignity.\n\nHis famous quote, \"When the Church hears the cry of the oppressed it cannot but denounce the social structures that give rise to and perpetuate the misery from which the cry arises,\" embodied his prophetic ministry.\n\nOn March 23, 1980, he directly appealed to soldiers to stop killing civilians. The next day, March 24, while celebrating Mass at a hospital chapel, he was assassinated by a single bullet to the heart. His funeral drew 250,000 mourners despite government intimidation. He was beatified in 2015 and canonized in 2018, recognized as a martyr for the faith.","miracles":["Prophetic preaching that converted hearts and inspired justice","Miraculous cure of Cecilia Flores from life-threatening complications during pregnancy","His blood became a seed of peace in El Salvador","Intercessions for healing and protection widely reported","His witness inspired countless defenders of human rights worldwide","Appeared in visions to comfort the persecuted"],"imageUrl":"https://page.gensparksite.com/v1/base64_upload/762df8cede3a7f30adf55c464e1768cf","imageAttribution":"Portrait of Saint Óscar Romero by Griselda Tello (21st Century).
