Inspired by St. Alphonsus Rodriguez to evangelize in the Americas, he arrived in Cartagena, Colombia, in 1610.\n\nCartagena was a major slave port where 10,000 enslaved Africans arrived annually in horrific conditions. Peter made his life's work ministering to these slaves. When slave ships arrived, he would board them with food, medicine, and water, entering the dark holds where people lay in chains.\n\nHe learned African languages and used interpreters to communicate. He treated the slaves' wounds, fed them, and assured them of their human dignity and God's love. He insisted on baptizing them properly, ensuring they understood the faith. He followed up with continued catechesis and advocacy.\n\nPeter faced opposition from slave traders and even fellow clergy who considered Africans inferior. He persisted, making a vow as \"slave of the slaves forever.\" He also ministered to prisoners and hospital patients, showing particular care for the most abandoned.\n\nIn his final years, he suffered from Parkinson's disease and was neglected by his caregivers. He died on September 8, 1654, and was canonized in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII, along with his mentor St. Alphonsus Rodriguez.","miracles":["Converted and baptized an estimated 300,000 enslaved Africans","Gift of tongues - understood and was understood by slaves of various languages","Miraculous multiplication of food and supplies for the slaves","Healed many sick slaves through prayer and care","Prophesied future events including his own death","Supernatural knowledge of souls' spiritual states"],"imageUrl":"https://page.gensparksite.com/v1/base64_upload/92eb1cfdfd3aa9103938c57253b0cd17","imageAttribution":"Saint Peter Claver by Arturo Garcia Bustos (c. 1980s).
